General Description

Thorold's Carnegie Library was opened in 1912. It is one of 2500 such libraries are funded by a Scottish-born American industrialist and philanthropist named Andrew Carnegie. Many Carnegie Libraries were built around the world from 1883 to 1929. In 1947, there were 11,000 books on the shelves, and the Thorold Library had a membership of 900.

As of 2021, the building is still being well-maintained as a meeting place for Thorold Seniors. It is also used for Niagara Regional Labour Council, and as a counselling and psychotherapy office.

On June 18th, 1983, Thorold's present library was opened and built adjacent to Chestnut Hall. The Carnegie Library has a strong presence and is a local landmark at Ormond Street.

Historical Attributes

In April 1912, Thorold's Public Library was opened. A.E Nicholson was the architect of the Carnegie Library and was also responsible for the Grimsby and Merriton Carnegie Libraries. In 1947, the interior of the Library was remodeled, making it one of the most updated libraries in Ontario. The building was funded by Andrew Carnegie.
