General Description

Battle of Beaverdams Park was formally opened in 1976,on the infilled channel of the second Welland Canal. It commmorates the historic battle which took place during the War of 1812. (The actual battlefield is located about 1.5 km southeast of the park, near the corner of Old Thoroldstone Road and Davis Road, east of the Thorold Tunnel).

Battle of Beaverdams Park commemorates both Laura Secord and the soldiers who were involved in the Battle of Beaverdams in 1813. The park features historical monuments, a bandstand, and playground equipment. In 2021, the Park was temporarily closed for construction. The City of Thorold website contains the master plan to make improvements to this historic downtown park for residents of Thorold.



Historical Attributes

The Battle of Beaverdams Park commemorates Laura Ingersoll Secord and the soldiers who were involved in the Battle of Beaverdams in 1813. Laura Ingersoll Secord was the celebrated heroine of the War of 1812 who walked 32 km through American - occupied territory on June 22, 1813 to warn the British forces of a planned American invasion. Her warning foretold the Battle of Beaverdams, which was a significant victory fought on behalf of the British by First Nations allies, and a major turning point in the War of 1812. The park itself is located in Downtown Thorold, on top of the Second Welland Canal. The 40468.6 square meter passive park was created in 1976.

Some historic features include plaques commemorating the Welland Canal, the Battle of Beaverdams, the founding of Thorold, and the grave of 16 unknown American soldiers that died during the battle. The main entrance of the park is located on Sullivan Ave adjacent to the bus stop at Thorold Towpath Terminal.

The NS&T Commuter Railway connected all major Niagara municipalities. The Thorold NS&T station was found in this location.
 


The park was under construction when this photo was taken in 2021.
