Built for John McDonagh who was the mayor of Thorold from 1881-1884, it has had many uses and occupants throughout the years, owned by the St. John's Anglican Church, Great War Veterans' Association, Thorold Municipal Offices, and the Regional Health Department. Today Chestnut Hall stands as a part of the Thorold Public Library.
Chestnut Hall is currently the meeting place for the Thorold and Beaverdams Historical Society's monthly meetings. The Historical Society's mission is to preserve the history of Thorold.
As of November 2021, Chestnut Hall is maintained and is a part of the Thorold Public Library.
There has been much speculation throughout the years that Chestnut Hall is haunted by ghost. Paranormal "investigations" have taken place in an attempt to prove these claims, which arise from Chestnut Hall's earlier history as a jail and courthouse.
Since it has been designated as part of the Thorold Public Library, the nominal address of Chestnut Hall is now 14 Ormond Street North, Thorold.
