Bauhaus Tour Overview (Berlin)

Introduction

"Bauhaus" is a German word for 'School of Building'. Bauhaus was a pre-war art movement which began in the early 20th century in all combined fields such as architecture, fine art, and crafts. Beth Douglas, an author at RedBubble Blog, said "Minimalist, economical and bound in pre-Nazi anxities, the Bauhaus movement was always doomed for a spectacular and controversial period of design law and eventuated as a key player in 20th century architecture".[1] The origins of the Bauhaus comes from the late 19th century, in dead time of modern art and its manufacturing. The main aim of the Bauhaus art movement was to reunite modern art and functional design. Which would help create practical objects, that could be used in a day-to-day life with the soul of raw artwork in it.

Bauhaus was known to abandon many basic aspects of traditional art education. This factor deeply concerned the intellects and all the hierarchies of the art themselves. Even with taking a different approach to fine art and functional craft, it was no surprise to the world that Bauhaus became the most influential in other fields outside of painting and sculpture.[2] This included furniture and utensil designs by Marcel Breuer, Marianne Brandt, and world-renowned buildings and architectural structures by Walter Gropius and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The Bauhaus movement originally began in 1919 with Walter Gropius founding the first Bauhaus school of art. The main focus of the school was to eliminate the gap between art and industry by combining both crafts and fine arts.

During the late 19th century, fine art such as architecture and design were considered to be a higher esteem job then low-level craftmanship. However, Gropius rejected this idea and believed that all crafts including art, architecture and geometric design, could be brought together and mass produced.[3] The Bauhaus movement really does try to teach the true essence of materials as a core structure to all its work. This forces architects, sculpture, and artists to use the material most appropriate in 'real' form, and its nature should not be changed.[4] For example all these characteristics can be seen at all our destinations on this walking tour. This can be seen where supportive materials such as steel is exposed rather then being hidden with the interior framework of the building, or any piece of furniture. The Bauhaus movement also transformed the design of modern furniture by using the 'real' form method which allowed designers to use steal as frames and supports for tables, chairs, sofas, and even lamps.[5] The school was closed in the 1930s due to the Nazi's rising to power. However, this tour will highlight buildings, art work and sculptures influenced by the Bauhaus Art Movement still existing in 21th century Berlin.

The first stop of the tour is at Klingelhöferstraße 14 called the Bauhaus Archive, which holds majority of written and painted work influenced by the Bauhaus Movement. The next destination will be the Groipus Bau located at Niederkirchnerstraße 7, this exhibition venue is one of Europe's most-important; as it highlights a lot of early Bauhaus style of art work. Neue Nationalgalerie is an art museum and is the third destination on this tour, the museum expresses a variety of its sculpture around the building through Bauhaus art style. This tour will visit the Museum of Decorative Arts (Kunstgewerbemuseum) which contains modern furniture built by Ludwig Mies can der Rohe, one of the founding fathers of Bauhaus. The last two destinations on this tour will look at the major architectural examples of Bauhaus still standing in Berlin. Both of these sites are part of the UNESCO World Heritage sites. Kant Garage, which was the first multi story car Garage built in Berlin and Bauhaus housing estate. Conducting this walking tour is a great honour to us as this year (2019) marks the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus Art Moment.
