This hotel was built in 1864 with one- hundred and ten rooms, although there is one peculiar room which has many reported paranormal experiences. The story behind this room comes from before the hotel was built, there stood a wooden house. During the invasion an American soldier searching the house stumbled upon a figure standing tall watching his comrades outside the house from a window. Without a second thought he charged at the figure he assumed was a British soldier but ended up killing Molly McGuire the ghost who haunts the room today.
The hotel was constructed in 1864, in 1901 it was renamed in honour of the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York. The hotel was extended in 1975 down King Street and Picton Street.
