Looking back towards the fort from the surrounding grounds. The American flag is being flown to represent the American occupation of the Fort during the War of 1812

Abatis were belts of sharpened tree roots and branches placed by both sides during the war during the siege of the Fort in 1814. They were meant to slow down the enemy. In this photo they are the section of wooden branches placed together

The History of the Fort

  • Originally built in 1764 on the edge of the river.
  • The Fort took a beating from the elements, so it was planned to be moved to its current location.
  • On June 18th, 1812 the United States declared war on Great Britain. The unfinished fort was occupied by the British and Canadian troops at the beginning of the war, where they faced conflict from the Americans. The British eventually dismantled what stood of the new Fort and withdrew farther inland.
  • The Americans occupied the ruins, but were were forced back by the British. Once this had happened, the British returned to rebuild the Fort.
  • In July of 1814, the now finished fort was captured by the Americans. In what would be the bloodiest battle of the war, the British troops launched an attack on the Fort. Unfortunately for them, they lost 1,000 men and failed to recapture the Fort.
  • The Americans held the Fort until November of 1814, when they destroyed the Fort and withdrew to Buffalo for the final time.
  • The British occupied the ruins until the 1820's when they finally left the Fort for good.
  • The Fort was left in ruin until 1937, when it was rebuilt to what you see today.

The Haunted Side of the Fort

Being the site of Canada's bloodiest battle, it is said that many people never truly left the Fort!

  • One ghost story that comes out of the Fort is of two Soldiers who are said to be seen walking together. The two appear to be victims of warfare, as both are known to be missing their heads and hands!
  • During your tour of the Fort you'll get to see Captain Kingsly's bed - The bed, which belonged to Captain Kingsly of the King's 8th Regiment of Foot, was the bed he used while he lived in the Fort and the same bed he ultimately died in. He suffered from vicious fevers, hallucinations and eventually mercury poisoning. Due to his long and horrible death, people believe Kingsly haunts the bed and the room it occupies. The sheets can be found strewn about, as well as footsteps have been heard and windows and doors known to move without being touched

Ghost Tours are offered at this location in the summer months & throughout October! Each tour are approximately 2 hours in length.
