General Description

Old Fort Erie is a historical landmark that features costumed tour guides and actors to greet the guests and guide them through the experience of a fort under siege. Visitors who come here will be guided throughout the ground and will be taught about Niagara's crucial role in the War of 1812. They also have the chance to experience musket demonstrations and an annual live reenactment of the battles fought here so long ago.

Recreational Features

This location features costumed tours throughout the grounds to teach visitors about Niagara's role in the War of 1812. They also provide musket demonstrations and the annual Siege of Old Fort Erie Re-enactment. Along with these activities, they also have a theatre and snack bar.

Historical Attributes

Old Fort Erie today is not the original fort that was built, whereas the original was closer to the waters edge. The fort was used mostly as a ship port and supply depot for the people of the Upper Great Lakes. The fort was used from 1775-1783 by the British and Six Nations soldiers and warriors during the American Revolution. Unfortunately the fort suffered damage over many winters and the fort was dismantled in 1813 during the War of 1812 attacks. In 1814 the fort was completely destroyed by American troops. The Niagara Parks Commission along with provincial and federal governments began rebuilding the fort and restoring it in 1937 and it was opened again in 1939.

The picture above shows a memorial dedicated to everyone alike who fought amongst the battlefields of Old Fort Erie and sacrificed their lives here.

Importance Within NPC

Old Fort Erie is important to the Niagara Parks Commission because it is often referred to as the bloodiest battlefield in Canadian history. This location serves as a look into the past for all visitors to educate themselves on our part in the War of 1812. The NPC uses this location for reenactments to give visitors the experience of what it actually felt like to be a part of the battle and also allows them to explore the fort when open which can be a very eye opening and educational experience.
